foodie escape to Tasmania

If you are looking for a foodie escape to Tasmania, you came to the right place. Last month I travelled to Tasmania for the first time. While I have visited many places around Australia, Tasmania had been on my bucket list for a while. Tasmania is well-known for being a foodie destination, so when I found some very affordable flights to Launceston for the Australia Day long weekend I didn’t hesitate.

Tasmania’s strong tradition of small-scale production, organic farming and sustainability, along with rich soil, pure air and clean water inspire dedicated growers to produce a truly authentic food and drink experience. Tasmania is also a great place to learn about and try fresh produce.

While I flew into Launceston, I spent most of my time out of the city, driving from the Tamar Valley to the Bay of Fires. In the Tamar Valley, the cool climate is ideal for growing Pinot Noir grapes, as well as Riesling and Chardonnay. I visited over half of the region’s winery and tasted a wide range of delicious local wine (I wasn’t driving!). I also enjoyed local ciders, and went blueberry picking – my first time picking my own fruits!

In the Tamar Valley I also tried lavender ice-cream for the first time, at the Bridestowe Lavender Estate which is home of the worlds finest pure lavender. I also had a lavender cookie that tasted very similar to the ones I made a few months ago! So I was pretty pleased with that.

I couldn’t go to Tasmania and not indulge on cheese tasting. After trying all sorts of deliciously creamy cheddar at Pyengana Dairy Company, I indulged on home-made Lemon Myrtle ice-cream and Leatherwood Honey ice-cream. Leatherwood Honey is a uniquely flavoured honey of the highest quality, which is only produced in Tasmania.

The trip to the Bay of Fires, via the town of Scottsdale was one of the most scenic as we wound our way up and down the mountains. Some of the few stops included cider sampling, and of course the Australia’s traditional fish n’ chips in the coastal town of St Helens. There I indulge on a French style crepe for breakfast. The food in Tasmania was up my expectations – quality produce prepared with love.
